Catherine talks about Kinoptik lenses and her short film Out of Order

About two years ago, TLS did a wonderful job servicing my vintage Kinoptik lenses. All of them still have their original Cameflex mount, since I film with them on my Eclair Cameflex. TLS helped preserve the fantastic quality of these almost 60-year-old lenses so that I can continue to film with them on many projects, and I would highly recommend their services to anyone.

The Kinoptiks produce a gorgeous, unique image closely associated with French New Wave cinema, as the Cameflex and Kinoptiks were very popular among filmmakers of that time (the Cameflex being a lightweight MOS 35mm camera with a convenient three-lens turret, perfect for a more mobile filmmaker.) Because of this, I was inspired to make a satire of my favourite crime films: Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samourai and Le Cercle Rouge, both of which were shot at least in part on a Cameflex. In Out of Order, an unusually stylish gangster straight out of a Melville heist goes about his everyday routine, which ranges from the mundane to murderous. To emulate these films' brilliant use of colour, lighting, and sound design -- which in turn had been an homage to American noir films -- I shot on all four available film stocks, used practical lighting wherever possible, and dubbed the dialogue and sound effects. You can read more about the film and the process of making it at www.outofordermovie.com, and see another film shot with the same Kinoptiks at www.flashframefilm.com. Thank you, TLS, for enabling me to use these beautiful lenses!
